Italian journalism loses a historic figure. He died on Tuesday 14 January Furio Colombo, a past as a correspondent of the Rai and as a columnist of Republic. He directed The Unity and founded The Daily Fact. His political commitment is also noteworthy, given that he was a parliamentarian in three different legislatures with Ds, Ulivo e Pd. I funerals of the journalist will be held at Roma Wednesday 15 January.

This is the statement on the death and the date of funerals in Rome:

“This morning Furio Colombo died at the age of 94, assisted by his wife Alice and daughter Daria. His activity as a journalist was very intense, which saw him as a RAI correspondent and correspondent from the United States, editorialist for Repubblica, director of L’Unita, founder of Il Fatto Quotidiano. Member of Parliament for three legislatures for the DS, L’Ulivo and the Pd. He carried out an intense cultural activity as an author of literary and cinematographic texts and directed the Cultural Institute of New York for three years, as well as holding a professorship at Columbia University. He also held corporate positions first at Olivetti and then as Fiat Representative in the United States. The funeral will take place at the Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome tomorrow, Wednesday 15 January at 3pm”.

Who was the journalist Furio Colombo

Furio Colombo was born in Chatillon, in Valle d’Aosta, the January 1, 1931from an Israelite family.

Graduated in Law in Turin, he participated in the writing of some Rai programs at a very young age Umberto Eco, Gianni Vattimo e Piero Angela, also making documentaries.

A professional journalist since 1967, a few years later he became an adjunct professor at the DAMS of Bologna, which he helped to found, teaching theory and techniques of media and radio and television language.

In 1971 he signed the open letter to The Express against the commissioner Luigi Calabresi (come Oliviero Toscani, died the day before Furio Colombo).

In November 1975 he was the last to be interviewed Pier Paolo Pasolini per The Pressthe day before the intellectual’s murder.

Precisely for the Turin newspaper he was a correspondent from the United States, while for Republic the editorialist said.

He also wrote for the New York Timestaught Journalism at Columbia University ea Berkeley.

Having survived a plane crash in 1991, in 2001 he was appointed director of the Unit – reborn after the bankruptcy of 2000 – a position he held until 2005, then being replaced by the co-director Antonio Padellaro, after pressure from the DS, according to what was written by Marco Travaglio right on Unità in 2008.

In 2009 he was among the co-founders of Daily Factacting as a columnist until 13 May 2022 before leaving in controversy with Travaglio and Padellaro for the space granted to the pro-Putinian theories of Alessandro Orsini after the invasion of Ukraine.

In the same month he returned to collaborate with Republic.

Who was the political Furio Colombo?

From 1996 to 2011 Furio Colombo was a deputy with the Democratic Party of the Left and the Democrats left.

He returned to Parliament in 2006 as senator of the Dselected in Lombardy, joining the parliamentary group ofOlive.

Re-elected deputy again in 2008, for Pd (in which he had tried to run as secretary in 2007) was part of the III Commission (Foreign and Community Affairs) and of the Examining Commission of the Ilaria Alpi and Maria Grazia Cutuli Award.[

Dalla morte di Mirko Tremaglia fino allo scioglimento delle Camere è stato il più anziano deputato della XVI legislatura, terminando il mandato nel 2013.

È grazie alla sua attività parlamentare se esiste una legge (istituita nel 2000) che riconosce il 27 gennaio come Giorno della Memoria, approvata all’unanimità dalla Camera dei deputati e successivamente dal Senato.

Secondo il sito OpenParlamento, Furio Colombo è stato il deputato con il più alto numero di voti ribelli (633), contrari quindi alle indicazioni del partito di appartenenza.

È stato presidente nazionale di Sinistra per Israele, associazione che si propone di “contrastare i pregiudizi antisraeliani, antisionisti e talora perfino antisemiti che albergano anche in una parte consistente della sinistra italiana”.

Nel maggio 2015, in occasione dell’85° compleanno di Marco Pannella, annunciò l’iscrizione al Partito Radicale Transnazionale.[
